Stirling-PDF: edit PDFs without handing them over.

Short answer

Stirling-PDF is a set of PDF tools in the browser: merge, split, convert, compress, recognise text, redact and sign. It replaces Adobe Acrobat and the free PDF websites where staff now drag their files. Jevana hosts it as an instance of its own, so the files stay in an environment that is your organisation's alone, and keeps it updated with backups and monitoring.

Where your contracts go today

Someone has to stick two PDFs together and types that into a search engine. The first result is a free website. The file is a contract, or a payslip, and it now sits on a server owned by who knows whom.

That is rarely bad intent. It is convenience. Banning it does not help. Offering the same buttons at an address of your own organisation does.

That is what Stirling-PDF does. The files go from the laptop to a server we manage, running for your organisation only.

What you can do with it

Arranging

  • Merge PDFs into one file
  • Split a PDF into separate parts
  • Rotate or remove pages, or put them in another order

Converting

  • Convert a PDF to another file type and back
  • Make a scan searchable with text recognition (OCR)

Cleaning up

  • Shrink a file that is too large
  • Black out sensitive passages before you pass something on

Finishing

  • Sign a document
  • Save the result or mail it straight away

The short version

Takes the place of
Adobe Acrobat and the free PDF websites.
Where the files stay
On the server of your own instance, not on a third-party website.
Access
With the accounts your organisation already has, if you have that set up.
Address
On a domain name of your own, so staff have one fixed place to go.
Licence
MIT, with an open source core; the maker sells paid extras. The name Stirling-PDF is a trademark of its owner and Jevana is not part of the project.

Questions

Can Stirling-PDF replace Adobe Acrobat?

For daily tasks it can: merge, split, compress, convert, recognise text, redact and sign. These are tools in the browser, not a full layout editor. If your team mostly assembles PDFs and prepares them for sending, they no longer need an Acrobat licence. If they work deeper with forms, we look together at what is missing.

Why Stirling-PDF instead of a free PDF website?

With a free website you do not know who receives the file, how long it stays there or what happens to it. For contracts, payslips and client files that is not a small matter. Stirling-PDF does the same job on a server of your own organisation. A member of staff notices little difference; you know where the file has been.

Can Stirling-PDF pull text out of a scan?

Yes. With text recognition (OCR) a scanned document becomes searchable, so you can search in it and copy text. The quality depends on the scan: a crooked or faint page gives worse text. If you want to archive and find a whole stack of scans automatically, look at Paperless-ngx as well, which is built for that.

Who in our organisation can use Stirling-PDF?

That is your call. It can be everyone with an account in your organisation, through single sign-on, or a smaller group. Staff open an address on your own domain and drag their file onto it. There is no program to install. If you want to talk about permissions, we do that before the set-up.

What does Jevana do for Stirling-PDF?

We build an instance of its own, give it an address under your domain name, keep the software current and watch that everything keeps running. The instance gets a daily backup, with a copy in another place. Your staff simply use it. Which of the maker's paid extras you might need, we go through in the proposal you receive first.

An introduction costs nothing. You talk straight away to one of the two people who will actually do the work.
