Magento maintenance: looked after, even when nothing is broken.
Patches, backups, logs and a person who picks up. The work that keeps a shop alive.
Short answer
Magento maintenance is the ongoing upkeep of a Magento shop: installing security patches, updating modules, checking backups, going through error messages and stepping in when something fails. Jevana does this for a fixed monthly amount, also for shops built by another agency. Every change goes to a staging environment first, so the live shop is not the testing ground.
What happens in a month
Security
- Security patches from Adobe, when they are released
- Updates to third-party modules, tested before they go live
- Admin accounts reviewed and two-step verification enforced
Health
- Cron and indexers checked for backlog
- Error logs read, not just stored
- Disk space, database and search index watched
Safety net
- Daily backup of files and database
- A restore test at an agreed time
- The previous version ready to put back after a release
When something fails
- Monitoring of the shop, the checkout and the payment link
- One contact person, no queue
- The cause on paper afterwards
What is covered and what is not
| Work | In the monthly amount | Priced separately |
|---|---|---|
| Security patches | Yes | No |
| Module updates | Yes, within the same major version | A module that has to be rewritten |
| Fixing an outage | Yes, if the cause is in what we manage | Faults in third-party custom work |
| Upgrade to a new Magento release | No | Yes, as a project with a fixed price |
| New features | No | Yes, through development |
Taking over a shop someone else built
Shops usually change hands because the agency stopped, became too expensive or no longer replies. There is rarely any documentation.
That can be fixed. We read the code, map out which modules are in it and how it is deployed, and set up a staging environment if there is none. Any risks we find, you hear about before we take on the maintenance.
Start with an auditQuestions
What is covered by Magento maintenance?
Maintenance covers security patches, module updates, checking backups, monitoring the shop and fixing outages in what we manage. An upgrade to a new Magento release and building new features fall outside it and are priced separately. That keeps the monthly amount predictable, and you know where you stand.
How do you respond when the shop has an outage?
That is set out in the contract and differs per shop. During office hours you reach one of us directly. For shops that make most of their revenue in the evening and at weekends, on-call cover outside office hours is possible as a paid arrangement. We state no minutes here, because we only commit to what is written down per client.
Can you take over a Magento shop from another agency?
Yes. We need access to the server, the code and the back office. With that we make an inventory: which version, which modules, which changes and whether the core was altered. Then you know what the shop needs and what the maintenance costs. The old agency only has to hand over the access.
What if the previous builder documented nothing?
Then we write it down. Code can be read, even without a manual. We record which modules run, what they do, how the shop is linked to other systems and how a new version goes live. That description is yours. It takes time at the start, but afterwards the shop no longer depends on one person.
Is maintenance needed if the shop runs fine?
Yes, because the surroundings change even when the shop does not. Adobe releases security patches several times a year for flaws that become known at that point. Payment providers and carriers change their links. PHP versions expire. A shop left untouched for a year still works, but is open to attacks that were described long ago.
