Intune and Autopilot: the laptop sets itself up.
We set once what a workplace looks like. After that every device follows by itself.
Short answer
Microsoft Intune is the service for managing an organisation's laptops, phones and tablets centrally: settings, programs, updates and security. That is called mobile device management, or MDM. Windows Autopilot is the part that lets a new laptop set itself up at first sign-in. Jevana sets up and maintains both; they come with Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
Intune and Autopilot, told apart
| Question | Intune | Autopilot |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Manages a device for as long as it is in use | Handles the very first start of a new laptop |
| Which devices | Windows, macOS, iOS, Android | Windows only |
| When you notice it | At every update and every new setting | Once, when unpacking |
| Can it work without the other | Yes | No, it needs Intune |
What we set up
Per device
- Disk encryption on, with the recovery key stored safely
- Updates in rounds, a pilot group first
- A passcode and automatic locking
Per group
- Programs per department or role
- Wifi, printers and VPN without setting them up by hand
- Different rules for a shared laptop than for a personal one
In an incident
- Block or wipe a device from a distance
- Remove only the business data from a personal phone
- A device that does not meet the rules cannot reach company data
The work is in the first set-up
Switching Intune on is one click. Deciding which programs everyone gets, which updates when, what is allowed on a personal phone and what a lost laptop means: those are the organisation's choices, not technical ones.
We put those choices to you in plain language, turn them into policy and try them on a few laptops before the whole company follows. After that a new laptop is no longer a project.
How rolling out with Autopilot worksQuestions
What is Intune?
Intune is Microsoft's service for managing devices. From one screen you set which programs, settings and security rules apply to your organisation's laptops, phones and tablets, and you see whether each device meets them. It works over the internet, so also for devices that never come to the office. Intune is part of Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
What is the difference between Intune and Autopilot?
Intune manages a device throughout its use; Autopilot only handles the start. With Autopilot a new Windows laptop recognises at first start which organisation it belongs to and registers with Intune. From that moment Intune takes over and installs the programs and settings. Autopilot without Intune does not exist.
Can personal phones go into Intune too?
Yes, in a way that leaves the private side alone. On a personal phone Intune manages only the work apps, such as Outlook and Teams, and the data in them. The organisation can put a PIN on those apps and wipe the business data when someone leaves. The employee's photos, messages and other apps are not visible to the employer.
What happens if a laptop is stolen?
You report it, and we block the device and issue a wipe command that runs as soon as the laptop connects. Because the disk is encrypted, nobody can reach the data without signing in. The files themselves are in OneDrive or SharePoint and are not lost. The employee signs in on a replacement laptop and carries on.
Does Intune work for Macs too?
Yes. Intune also manages macOS, iPhones and iPads. For Apple devices the automatic first set-up runs through Apple Business Manager, which is linked to Intune. The options are a little more limited than on Windows, but encryption, updates, programs and remote wiping work the same. A mixed environment is no problem.
