Magento SEO: the technology first, then the text.

A shop with ten thousand products makes a million addresses if nobody steps in. Google needs to know which ones matter.

Short answer

Technical SEO for Magento means making sure search engines can read the catalogue properly: one address per page, filters that do not create an endless run of duplicate pages, correct redirects, a current sitemap, structured product data and a fast load time. Jevana does this technical part. Writing copy and building links we leave to a content specialist.

Where it goes wrong in Magento

Too many addresses

Every filter, every sort order and every pagination step creates a new address.

  • Colour and size filters that are seen as separate pages
  • A product with four addresses through four categories
  • Search results that end up in the index

Vanished pages

Products come and go, and their address goes with them.

  • Sold-out products that give an error page
  • Renamed categories without a redirect
  • A redirect table that has got out of hand

What Google cannot read

Price, stock and reviews are on the page, not in the data.

  • Structured data that is missing or wrong
  • Multilingual shops with no reference to each other's translation
  • Content that only appears after scripts have loaded

Speed counts, twice

Google measures how quickly a page becomes usable for real visitors, and uses that in ranking. A slow shop ranks lower.

The second effect is less well known. Google visits a site with a limited number of requests per day. The slower the server answers, the fewer pages get looked at. In a large catalogue that means new products show up in search results weeks later.

Questions

What often goes wrong technically with SEO in Magento?

Most often it is duplicate addresses. Magento creates its own URL for every filter, every sort order and every category a product sits in. Without canonical references and rules for search engines, Google sees the same content hundreds of times. The result is that the real category and product pages rank lower than they deserve.

What do URL rewrites do to your Google rankings?

A URL rewrite links a readable address to a product or category. If the name or place in the catalogue changes, the address changes. If Magento then makes a redirect from old to new, the ranking is kept. If that setting is off or the table fills with chains, pages lose the value they built up.

Do you also write copy for product pages?

No. We do the technical side: the structure of addresses, the data search engines read, speed and the server. Product copy, category descriptions and link building are a different trade. We gladly work with the copywriter or agency you have for that, and supply what they need, such as templates for titles.

Does Hyvä help with search visibility?

Indirectly, through speed. Hyvä loads far less JavaScript, so pages become usable sooner and Google's measurements of real visitors improve. Hyvä changes nothing about the structure of addresses, canonicals or structured data; those have to be right regardless. A fast shop with a messy catalogue remains hard to find.
