A private cloud: your own piece of our rack.
Several servers, a network of your own between them, one fixed monthly price. No bill that grows with every request.
Short answer
A private cloud is a sealed-off environment at a host in which an organisation has its own virtual servers, networks and storage, apart from other clients. Jevana builds it on its own hardware in the Netherlands, with Proxmox as the virtualisation platform. It is an alternative to servers at the office, to a VMware setup that has become too expensive and to the public cloud with its changing bill.
Three places for your servers
| Subject | Server at the office | Public cloud | Private cloud with us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whose hardware it is | Yours | An American company's | Jevana's |
| What you pay | Purchase, power, replacement | Per hour and per gigabyte, varying | A fixed amount per month |
| Who manages it | You, or nobody | You, with a hundred buttons | We do |
| Where the data is | In the meter cupboard | In a region of your choice | In Hengelo |
| Being able to leave | It is already yours | Outgoing traffic costs money | You take the virtual servers with you |
Why Proxmox
Proxmox VE is open source software for running virtual servers. It does the same work as VMware, without a licence per processor and without a supplier who can change the terms on its own.
That last point is not theory. Since Broadcom took over VMware, licences have become much more expensive for many organisations and small packages have disappeared. If you run your own VMware setup and see the renewal coming, you can move your virtual servers to Proxmox. The format is interchangeable.
What is in your environment
Servers
- Virtual servers, Linux or Windows
- Memory and storage adjustable without moving
- A snapshot before a risky change
Network
- A sealed-off network of your own between your servers
- A firewall with rules that apply only to you
- A secure connection to your office
Certainty
- Daily backup of every server, on separate storage
- Monitoring, with alerts coming to us
- A copy of the backups at an external location
- Mirroring to a second location, for whatever cannot stand still
Questions
What is a private cloud?
A private cloud is an environment of virtual servers, storage and networks sealed off for a single organisation. You share no network and no management environment with others. The difference from a public cloud such as Azure or AWS is that the environment has fixed limits and a fixed price, and that you know which hardware and which building your servers are in.
Why Proxmox and not VMware?
Proxmox is open source, has no licence cost per processor and does not make you dependent on one supplier's pricing. Technically it does what an SME environment needs: virtual servers, snapshots, backups and networks. VMware has more features for very large environments, but since the Broadcom takeover it has become expensive for smaller organisations.
Do I share hardware with other clients?
The physical servers are shared, your virtual servers and network are not. Every client has a sealed-off network and virtual machines of their own, and you cannot see each other's traffic or data. If you want the hardware to yourself as well, that is possible with one or more machines of your own in our rack. It costs more and is only needed for specific requirements.
Can our VMware servers move to your environment?
Yes. Virtual servers from VMware can be converted to the Proxmox format. First we do a trial move with a copy and check that everything starts and the software works, then we plan the real switch. The servers themselves do not have to be set up again. We rebuild the network around them beforehand.
What happens if the hardware under my environment fails?
Then we restore your servers from backup, on other hardware. A copy of those backups sits at an external location, outside the data centre. Environments that cannot stand still we mirror continuously to a second location, so they can start there. How quickly you need to be back, we put in writing with you beforehand.
Goes well with
-
Dutch cloud
A cloud with a Dutch owner, on Dutch soil, under Dutch and European law.
-
Dedicated server
A physical server for you alone, in our rack, for when sharing is not an option.
-
VPS
A virtual server on our own hardware in the Netherlands, with or without management.
-
Backup and recovery
Backups of servers, workstations and a NAS to separate storage, with a restore test at a fixed moment.
-
Where does your organisation's data live, and why does it matter?
The difference between where your data physically sits and which law your supplier falls under, and what to ask your supplier.
