A Magento migration: the data moves, the shop is new.

Products, customers and orders come along. The theme and modules are rebuilt, and that is usually good news.

Short answer

A Magento migration is the move from another system to Magento 2: from Magento 1, its continuation OpenMage, or a platform such as WooCommerce or Shopify. The data moves with you: products, customers, orders and page addresses. The theme and modules are rebuilt, because they cannot be exchanged between systems. Jevana does the migration with a trial run and a final run.

Still on Magento 1

Adobe stopped Magento 1 in June 2020. There are no more security updates, and payment providers set ever stricter requirements for shops that run on it.

There is a middle way: OpenMage, a continuation of Magento 1 kept up by volunteers and running on current PHP versions. That buys time, and for some shops it is a defensible choice. It does not solve the fact that modules and developers for Magento 1 are becoming scarce.

A migration in two rounds

  1. 01

    Inventory

What the old shop does, which modules are still needed, which integrations run.

  2. 02

    New shop

Magento 2 set up, theme and modules built, on its own environment.

  3. 03

    Trial round

All data across, while the old shop keeps running. Check and correct.

  4. 04

    Final round

The old shop closes briefly. What was added since the trial moves over.

  5. 05

    Redirect

Every old URL points to its new place. We follow what happens in Search Console.

Questions

My shop still runs on Magento 1: what are the options?

There are three options: move to Magento 2, move to a lighter platform such as WooCommerce, or carry on for now with OpenMage. Which fits depends on the size of your range and how much custom work is in the shop. Staying on the original Magento 1 without updates is not an option we can recommend.

Do customers, orders and SEO rankings carry over in a migration?

Customers and orders move across as data. Rankings in Google stay if every old URL redirects cleanly to the new page and titles and texts come along. That is precise work: we list all existing addresses and check after the switch that they are right. A short wobble is normal, a lasting drop is not.

Is OpenMage a good alternative to Magento 2?

OpenMage is a good alternative to unpatched Magento 1, not to Magento 2. It keeps an existing Magento 1 shop safe and running on current software. If you have a shop with a lot of custom work that cannot be rebuilt soon, it gains you time. For a new shop or one that has to grow, Magento 2 is the logical base.

Can you move a shop from Shopify or WooCommerce to Magento?

Yes. We pull products, customers and orders through the API or an export of the old platform. Customer passwords cannot come along; customers set a new one at their first login. We always ask first why you want to move. If the reason can be fixed in the old platform, that is cheaper.

Can it go the other way, from Magento to something lighter?

Yes, and sometimes we recommend it. A shop with a few hundred products that makes no use of what sets Magento apart is cheaper to maintain on WooCommerce. We move the data the same way and arrange the redirects. For Shopify we help with the export; the management of Shopify itself we do not do.
