IT management you hardly notice.
Updates, backups, accounts and the network, kept up before anyone has to email about them.
Short answer
IT management is the ongoing work that keeps an organisation's computers, network and servers safe and usable: installing updates, checking backups, creating and closing accounts, and stepping in when something breaks. Jevana does this for small and medium-sized businesses, for a fixed monthly fee. You deal with the two people who do the work themselves.
Management is the work nobody sees
A laptop that gets its updates every month. A backup someone has checked can actually be restored. An account that closes on the day a colleague leaves. When all that goes well, you hear nothing about it.
In many companies a handy colleague does this on the side, or the director rings a sysadmin when something locks up. That works until the colleague is on holiday. We take over the lot, or just the part that keeps getting left.
What we look after
Workstations and accounts
Laptops, phones and the accounts your people sign in with.
- Updates for Windows, macOS and the programs you use
- New starters in, leavers out
- Two-step verification for everyone, no exceptions
- A lost laptop wiped from a distance
Network
Everything between the wall socket and the screen.
- Firewall and wifi on current software
- A separate network for guests
- An alert to us when a connection drops
Servers and backups
In the office, in a cloud or on our own hardware.
- Operating system and software kept up to date
- Backups to separate storage
- A restore test at an agreed moment
- Disk space and memory watched
Licences and suppliers
What you pay for, and to whom.
- An overview of subscriptions and licences
- Cancelling what nobody uses any more
- Contact with your internet provider or software supplier during an outage
Three ways to arrange it
| Item | A colleague does it on the side | Call when it breaks | Monthly management |
|---|---|---|---|
| Updates | When there is time | No | Every month, by us |
| Backup tested | Rarely | After the first loss | At a fixed moment |
| Cost | A colleague's hours | Per hour, unpredictable | Fixed monthly fee |
| Holiday or illness | Everything stops | Depends on the administrator | The other one of us steps in |
| How it works is written down | In one head | Usually not | On paper, and it is yours |
When this comes up
- The colleague who did the IT on the side has taken another job
- A client or insurer asks how your security is arranged
- Nobody knows which backups are running, or where they are kept
- Every month an invoice arrives for odd hours, and every month it is different

Questions
What does IT management cover?
IT management covers everything that comes round again: updates for laptops and servers, backup checks, creating and closing accounts, looking after the firewall and wifi, and fixing outages. Projects are not part of it, such as moving to a new office or switching to Microsoft 365. We agree those separately, with a fixed price up front.
What is the difference between IT management and systems administration?
In practice people mean the same thing. Systems administration is the older term and was mostly about servers and the office network. IT management is wider and also covers laptops, phones, cloud services such as Microsoft 365 and the licences that come with them. We say IT management, because for most organisations the server in the office is now the smallest part.
What is an MSP?
MSP stands for managed service provider: a company that looks after other organisations' IT on an ongoing basis for a fixed fee, instead of billing by the hour when something breaks. The difference is in the incentive. An MSP earns the most when little goes wrong. Jevana works that way, but we just call it IT management.
Do you take over existing systems?
Yes. We start with an inventory of what is running: which laptops, which server, which accounts and who can reach what. What is in good shape stays as it is. Risks, such as a server without updates or a backup that has never been tested, we deal with first. You get the result on paper, even if you do not continue with us.
How does the fixed monthly fee work?
You get a proposal up front that says what we manage and what that costs per month. The fee depends on the number of workstations, servers and locations. Outages in what we manage are included, so you do not pay extra when something breaks. Work outside management, such as a new project, gets its own price before we start.
