Matomo hosting: your visitor numbers stay yours.

You see how many people visit your website, where they come from and what they read. The numbers sit on a server in the Netherlands.

Short answer

Matomo is website statistics software that runs on your own server. It shows how many visitors come, from which sources, and whether they do what you want, such as filling in a form. If you use Google Analytics now, this is what you switch to. Jevana puts Matomo on servers of its own in the Netherlands and takes over the management. The numbers do not go to an advertising company.

Why the numbers should sit with you

If you use Google Analytics, you hand the behaviour of your visitors to a company that earns its money from advertising. For many sites that is an awkward trade for a bar chart.

With Matomo on our hardware, the data stays with you. You can set it up to measure without placing cookies. Then the statistics themselves need no cookie banner. That does not automatically cover the rest of your site: a chat widget or a third-party video can still ask for consent.

Whether your situation needs a banner depends on the whole site. The article below explains what to look at.

Is a cookie banner required?

What you can read off

Visitors

  • Numbers per day, week and month
  • Which pages get read
  • Which device and which browser

Source

  • Search engine, a link from another site, or direct
  • Which campaign or newsletter brought traffic

Goals

  • A form sent, an order placed
  • Which pages lead to that goal
  • Reports that arrive by email

What else you should know

Replaces
Google Analytics.
Management
We set it up and keep it current. A backup is made every day, with a second copy somewhere else.
Address
Matomo runs under a name of yours, so visitors never see a third party.
Licence
GPL 3.0. Some plugins are paid. The name Matomo is a trademark of its owner. Jevana does not belong to the project.
Leaving
Your figures can be exported. You are not stuck.

Questions

Is Matomo a real alternative to Google Analytics?

For most websites it is. Matomo shows visitors, sources, pages and goals, and can email reports. It lacks the link with Google Ads and the predictive features. If you do not use those, you miss little. If your campaigns hang on Google, check first whether that is a reason to stay.

Do we stop needing a cookie banner with Matomo?

Matomo can be set up so that the statistics need no consent. That does not mean your site never needs a banner, because other parts may place cookies themselves. We look at the whole site with you and write down what Matomo does. You will not get a legal opinion from us.

Can we bring our old Google Analytics data into Matomo?

Partly. Matomo can pull historical data from Google Analytics through an import function, but the numbers never match completely, because the two count differently. Expect a kink in the graph at the switch. We suggest measuring side by side for a while, so you can see how big the difference is.

What does Jevana do with our visitors' data?

Nothing, apart from storing and securing it. Jevana is the processor: the data is yours and sits on your own Matomo instance. We record that in a data processing agreement. We do not look into the numbers and share nothing with third parties. If you want to leave, you get an export and we delete the rest.
