Snipe-IT hosting: every laptop has a name and an owner.

You see who has which device, when it was bought and how long the warranty runs. With a label you can scan.

Short answer

Snipe-IT is software for keeping track of the devices and licences your organisation owns, and who uses them. Each device carries its purchase date, warranty and history, and you check devices out and take them back. For many organisations it replaces the spreadsheet. Jevana runs Snipe-IT for you on our own servers in the Netherlands and looks after it.

The life of a laptop in Snipe-IT

  1. 01

    Bought

The device gets a line with purchase date, supplier, serial number and warranty.

  2. 02

    A label

A label with a code goes on. Whoever scans it sees at once which device it is.

  3. 03

    Checked out

You book it out to an employee. From then on everyone knows who has it.

  4. 04

    Taken back

When someone leaves, you book it back in and see what is still open. The device can go to the next person.

For ten devices a spreadsheet is fine. It starts to chafe around thirty, when more people need to write in it.

Questions

Who is Snipe-IT meant for?

For organisations with enough devices to lose track, roughly from a few dozen. It suits a company with a fixed IT administrator, or an outside one who needs to show what is where. For an office with five laptops it is too much. A short list will do there.

Can Snipe-IT also track software and licences?

Yes. Besides hardware you can register licences, with the number of seats available and who holds them. That shows whether you pay for seats nobody uses. Accessories and consumables can go in too, such as mice and cables. It is meant for what you hand out and take back.

What is the difference between Snipe-IT and GLPI?

Snipe-IT is about devices: who has what, and when it was bought. GLPI does that too, and adds tickets and contracts, plus an agent that reads out the devices itself. It is heavier. Pick Snipe-IT if you want a clear overview, and GLPI if your IT department also wants to handle tickets.

How do we get our existing spreadsheet into Snipe-IT?

Snipe-IT can import a CSV file, so the move starts from your spreadsheet. We go through the columns, map them to fields in Snipe-IT and do a trial import. Mess in the original list, such as duplicate serial numbers, comes to the surface. That is often the most useful moment: you tidy up before you start.
