GLPI hosting: know what is there and what is broken.
An overview of every computer and programme, and one place where reports come in and get dealt with.
Short answer
GLPI is software for managing an IT environment. It keeps an inventory of hardware and software, filled in by an agent on each computer, and handles tickets for incidents and requests. Contracts and licences are in there too. It is an alternative to ServiceNow and other paid packages. Jevana runs GLPI on our own hardware in the Netherlands and manages it.
What GLPI keeps track of
Inventory
- Computers, screens, printers and network devices
- Installed software per machine
- An agent on each computer fills this in by itself
Tickets
- Incidents and requests, with who is working on them
- A history for each ticket
- Linking a ticket to the device it is about
Contracts and licences
- Maintenance contracts with an end date
- Software licences and who uses them
When a spreadsheet no longer does
- Nobody knows which version of a programme is on which computer
- A fault was reported twice and picked up by two people
- The server's maintenance contract ran out and nobody noticed
- For an audit you have to show what is inside, and that takes days
GLPI or Snipe-IT
| Subject | Snipe-IT | GLPI |
|---|---|---|
| What it is about | Checking devices out and in | The whole of IT management |
| Tickets for incidents | No | Yes |
| Inventory by an agent | No, you register by hand | Yes |
| Keeping track of contracts | Limited | Yes |
| Weight | Light, quick to grasp | More to set up and manage |
If you only need an overview of what is where, Snipe-IT is enough. GLPI is for an IT department that also handles tickets.
The facts

- Licence
- GPL 3.0. The name GLPI belongs to the project owner and Jevana stands apart from the project.
- Leaving
- Your data can be exported. There is no lock-in.
Questions
What is GLPI?
GLPI is an open source package for IT service management. It combines an inventory of hardware and software with a ticket system for incidents and with contract management. The inventory is filled by a small agent on each computer. It is meant for an IT department that wants to know what is there and what is going on.
Do staff have to log tickets in GLPI themselves?
They can, but they do not have to. GLPI has a portal where staff can enter a ticket, and tickets can also come in from a mailbox. Who receives and handles them, we agree with you. With us, contact runs through your contact person, and GLPI is the tool behind that.
Does every computer need an agent for GLPI?
For an inventory that keeps itself current, yes. The agent reads out which hardware and software is installed and reports it to GLPI. Without an agent you can enter devices by hand, but that goes stale. How the agent reaches the computers depends on how your workstations are managed. We help think that through.
Is GLPI too heavy for a small company?
Sometimes. GLPI offers more than a company with twenty computers will use, and it asks that someone looks after it. If you only want to know who has which device, Snipe-IT is lighter. GLPI pays off when you want tickets, contracts and an inventory in one place, and someone to work with it.
