Uptime Kuma hosting: a monitor that does not go down with you.
You hear from your monitor when your website, server or certificate stops responding. Not first from your customers.
Short answer
Uptime Kuma is monitoring software that checks whether websites, servers, ports and certificates respond. If something drops out, it sends a notification, and it can show a public status page. It takes the place of UptimeRobot or Pingdom. Jevana runs Uptime Kuma on its own hardware in the Netherlands, outside the network it has to watch.
Where the monitor sits decides whether it works
A monitor that runs on the same server or in the same office network as what it watches goes down with it. Then you get no notification, at exactly the moment you need one.
That is why our Uptime Kuma runs somewhere other than your own systems. If your office is cut off or your server has locked up, the monitor still looks from outside and sends its notification.
This is what an external monitor solves. It does not tell you why something is down, only that it is.
What it checks
| Kind of check | What it looks at |
|---|---|
| Website | Whether a page answers and contains the expected text |
| Server | Whether a machine can be reached |
| Port | Whether a service, such as mail or SSH, is listening |
| Certificate | How long an SSL certificate stays valid |
A notification can arrive by email or through a chat service, to whoever you choose.
What else comes with it
- Replaces
- UptimeRobot and Pingdom.
- Status page
- A public page under your own domain can be set up, so customers can look for themselves.
- Management
- We install, update, take a backup every day and watch the monitor itself too.
- Licence
- MIT. The name Uptime Kuma belongs to its maker, and Jevana has nothing to do with the project.
- Leaving
- Your list of checks can go with you. Nothing is locked in.
Questions
Is Uptime Kuma enough as monitoring for a small organisation?
For the question 'is it reachable' it is. It checks websites, servers, ports and certificates and reports failures. It does not measure how hard a server is working or what goes wrong inside an application. If you need that, a heavier system exists. For many small organisations, reachability is exactly what matters.
Why must Uptime Kuma run outside our own network?
Because a monitor inside the same network goes down when that network does. You then get no message exactly when you would want one. If it runs elsewhere, it keeps working, and you can tell 'our site is down' from 'our office has no internet'.
Can we show customers a status page with Uptime Kuma?
Yes. Uptime Kuma has a status page you can publish under your own domain. You choose which services appear on it and can add a note when something is wrong. Visitors do not need to log in. The page runs apart from your own systems, so it stays reachable during an outage.
Where do the Uptime Kuma notifications go?
You choose. Notifications can arrive by email, or in a chat service, so whoever is on duty sees them. We set them up with you: who gets what, for which service. A notification nobody reads does not help. So we also agree what happens when the person who receives it does not respond.
