Penpot hosting: design without handing your work over.
Your team draws together in one file, in the browser. The designs sit on a server we manage, in the Netherlands.
Short answer
Penpot is a design tool in the browser, for interfaces, components and design systems. Several people work in one file at the same time. It is built on open web standards (SVG and CSS) and takes the place of Figma. We set Penpot up for you on our own servers in the Netherlands and maintain it, so your designs do not sit in an American cloud.
When your own Penpot fits
- A client does not want designs that are still secret to sit in an American cloud
- Your agency pays per designer and the number of seats keeps growing
- Designers and developers want a shared file that does not tie them to one vendor
- You want to be able to say where your design files are, and who can reach them
What your team does with it
Drawing together
- Several people in the same file at once
- Comments in the design itself
- Sharing a design with a client to look at
Building blocks
- Components you make once and reuse everywhere
- A design system with colours, fonts and styles
Towards the developer
- Designs that rest on SVG and CSS, so close to what the browser draws
- Prototypes to click through a flow
The arrangements at a glance
- Replaces
- Figma.
- What we do
- The installation, the updates, a daily backup with a copy outside the data centre and the watching over it. You design.
- Domain
- You reach Penpot at an address under your own domain name. Signing in with the accounts you already have can be set up.
- Licence
- MPL 2.0. Penpot is a trademark of its owner and Jevana has no affiliation with the project.
- Leaving
- You can take your files with you. There is no lock-in.
Questions
Can Penpot really replace Figma for a design team?
For daily work it can: drawing interfaces, components, a design system and prototypes. The ecosystem around it is smaller than Figma's, with fewer plugins and fewer ready-made templates. A team that leans hard on those will notice. Try it on one project first, and you will see where it chafes.
Can we open existing Figma files in Penpot?
Not directly. Figma files have a format of their own that Penpot does not read. Tools exist to carry part of it across, but components and effects seldom arrive without errors. Expect a running project to be partly rebuilt. That is why we suggest starting with a new project.
Why should a design tool not sit in an American cloud?
It does not always matter, but sometimes it does. Designs for a product that has not been announced are commercially sensitive, and some clients require files to stay in Europe. With your own Penpot at our place you know exactly where it sits and who can reach it. For many teams that is the reason to move.
How many designers can work in our own Penpot at once?
That depends on how we set up the server, and we agree it to suit your team. Penpot works in the browser, so the load falls mostly on the server. A large file with many images asks more than a simple screen. Tell us how big your team is and we will write a proposal for it.
