Metabase hosting: answers from your own data.
Connect a database, ask a question and put the answer on a dashboard. Without SQL, or with SQL if you prefer.
Short answer
Metabase is software for dashboards and reports on your own data. You connect a database, build charts without SQL (or with SQL, if you want), share dashboards and have reports emailed at a set time. It takes the place of Power BI, Tableau or Looker Studio. Jevana runs Metabase on servers of its own in the Netherlands and does the maintenance.
From database to dashboard
- 01
Connect a source
Metabase reads from a database you already have, for example that of your webshop or your accounting package. We arrange the connection and the permissions.
- 02
Ask a question
You pick a table, then filter and group with the mouse. If you know SQL, you write the query yourself.
- 03
Put it on a dashboard
The answers come together on a page your colleagues can open. They always see the current figures.
- 04
Have it sent round
A dashboard or chart can be emailed at a set time to whoever needs it.
A webshop, without slowing the webshop down
A common setup is a dashboard on the database of a webshop: turnover per week, orders per product, who comes back. That database is busy taking orders, and a heavy reporting query can make the shop slow.
So we let Metabase read from a copy of that database. The shop notices nothing, and an awkward query cannot cost anyone an order.
In practice
- Replaces
- Power BI, Tableau and Looker Studio.
- With us
- Only your organisation uses the installation. We make the connection to your databases and see that a backup is taken each night and kept outside the data centre.
- Colleagues can sign in with their existing account if you want single sign-on.
- Licence
- AGPL 3.0 for the open source edition. Paid editions add features. Metabase is a brand of its owner, and Jevana stands apart from the project.
- Leaving
- Questions and dashboards can be exported. You never handed over the sources.
Questions
Do you need to know SQL to use Metabase?
No. Most questions are asked with the mouse: pick a table, filter, add up, group. Anyone who knows SQL can write a query for what the buttons cannot do. How the data is set up helps a lot. That is why we prepare the main tables and columns with names people understand, together with you.
Can Metabase replace a Power BI licence?
For dashboards, filters and emailed reports it usually can. Metabase is lighter and reads straight from a database. It is weaker at heavy data modelling and at the link with Excel and Microsoft 365. If you lean on those a lot, Power BI gives you more. We talk that through before you choose.
Is it safe to connect Metabase to our database?
Yes, if it is set up properly. We use a user that can only read and only reaches the tables that are needed, preferably on a copy of the database. Personal data nobody needs to see in a report is left out. Who may see what, you record in Metabase itself.
Where does our data end up if Jevana runs Metabase?
The data stays in your own databases. Metabase keeps only its own settings: your questions, dashboards and connections. That sits on Jevana hardware in the Netherlands, in an instance that is yours alone. A copy of the database for reporting belongs there too, if you want one.
