Short answer

Listmonk is software for newsletters and mailing lists: subscriber lists, templates, campaigns, sign-up forms with confirmation and statistics. It is small and fast, and an alternative to Mailchimp. It does no automation; that is what Mautic is for. At Jevana every client gets a Listmonk of their own; we set the sender and do the upkeep.

Mail that stays out of spam

A newsletter from your own domain stands or falls with the sender settings. SPF, DKIM and DMARC have to be right, or mail servers refuse your message or put it in the junk folder.

With Mailchimp the provider arranges that for you, because you send from their domain. On a server of your own it has to be right on your domain. We set that up before you send the first issue.

Why a sender needs these three checks

When you start thinking about it

  • The list of your subscribers sits with a company in the US and you want it in your own hands
  • You send a newsletter a few times a year and use a fraction of what your plan can do
  • A subscriber asks for their data to be deleted and you do not know everywhere it is kept

Questions

Can Listmonk replace Mailchimp?

For newsletters and mailing lists it can: subscriber lists, templates, campaigns, sign-up forms with confirmation and statistics. What Mailchimp does on top, such as automatic sequences or ads, Listmonk does not do. If you need that, you look at Mautic. We tell you honestly beforehand which of the two suits how you work.

Why is Listmonk so small and fast?

It does one thing: managing lists and sending mail. That makes it a light program that asks little of the server and handles big lists quickly. You are not paying for features you never use. If you later want more, such as campaigns based on behaviour, that goes through a different program.

Do subscribers have to confirm their sign-up in Listmonk?

They can, and we recommend it. A new subscriber gets a mail with a confirmation link and joins the list only after clicking it. That stops someone else from signing up your address, and it gives you a list of people who really want the newsletter. Unsubscribing is part of it too.

Why do SPF, DKIM and DMARC have to be right for Listmonk?

A newsletter sent in your name is judged by the receiving server on its sender. If SPF, DKIM and DMARC are not in order, it ends up with the junk mail or reaches nobody. On your own server that is our job, and it happens before the first issue.

Where are my subscribers kept if I use Listmonk?

On an instance of its own, on Jevana hardware in the Netherlands. The list of addresses is not with an American mail provider. You can always export it, also if you want to leave. It also makes a request for access or deletion easier to handle, because there is one place to look.
