Nextcloud Talk: meetings where the conversation stays in the country.
Chat and video calls next to your files. For internal discussion and for calls with clients.
Short answer
Nextcloud Talk is the part of Nextcloud for chat, video calls and screen sharing. It comes with JevanaHub and runs on our own hardware in the Netherlands, so messages and calls do not pass through an American platform. You use it in the browser or with the app. For most teams it is a workable alternative to Microsoft Teams for internal discussion and calls with clients.
Talk and Teams, honestly side by side
| Subject | Nextcloud Talk | Microsoft Teams |
|---|---|---|
| Chat in groups and one to one | Yes | Yes |
| Video calls and screen sharing | Yes | Yes |
| Guests without an account | Yes, through a link | Yes, with more steps |
| Large meetings | Suited to team-size discussion | Stronger with hundreds of participants |
| Tied into Outlook and Office | No | Yes |
| Where the conversation runs | Through our hardware in the Netherlands | Through Microsoft |
Who Talk is enough for
A team of ten that wants to check in daily, share a file and now and then phone a client has enough in Talk. It sits in the same place as the files, so opening a document in a conversation is one click.
Those who hold a meeting with two hundred people every week, or who keep their whole diary in Outlook with meetings planned there, are better off with Teams. We say so when that is the case. Using them side by side works too: Teams for the outside world, Talk for what has to stay inside.

Questions
Can Nextcloud Talk replace Microsoft Teams?
For internal discussion, chat and calls with clients, yes. Talk offers group conversations, video calls and screen sharing, and guests can join through a link. It does not replace Teams where that is deeply tied into Outlook, Office and large meetings. Many organisations use Talk for daily discussion and keep Teams for the times a client asks for it.
Do video calls work with people outside the organisation?
Yes. You send a link, and the other person opens the call in their browser with no account or installation. You can put a password on the call and use a waiting room, so you decide when someone comes in. For the guest it works like any other video appointment: click, allow the camera, done.
Where are the conversations and messages kept?
Messages and shared files are in JevanaHub, on our hardware in the Netherlands. The picture and sound of a video call pass through our servers and are not stored unless you start a recording. No outside provider reads along or uses the data for anything else. An administrator can set how long chat history is kept.
Can we use Talk alongside Microsoft 365?
Yes. Talk is separate from Microsoft 365 and does not clash with it. A usual set-up is that mail and calendar stay with Microsoft, while confidential discussion and the files that go with it sit in JevanaHub. Staff then have two places, and that needs a clear agreement about what belongs where. We help make it.
