Why an old site is worth more than it looks

A ten-year-old site looks dated and works badly on a phone. But Google knows it. Other sites link to it, and for the company name and a few products it sits at the top.

That value lives in the addresses. If they disappear with the new site, the build-up starts again from nothing. It is the commonest and most avoidable loss in a website replacement, and it takes little effort to prevent.
